Whole-Class Sorts: Digital Tool For Collaborative Word Study

"X2 Mobile’s technical prowess is stellar." - S. Applebaum, Directory of Technology

About

Whole-Class Sorts is a web-based application that allows teachers to execute whole-class instruction sorts digitally.

The app utilizes the interactions and framework of Word Works. Designed for collaborative and engaging learning, Whole-Class Sorts provides practice with specific word study concepts, helping students systematically build their understanding of how English words are put together.

Therefore the 2 main functionalities are focused on the teacher’s needs for helping students to:

  • sort words using any criteria

  • learn how to form words

This project was developed for our partners at the Center of Collaborative Classroom (CCC), a non-profit educational organization, committed to ensuring that all students become readers, writers, and thinkers who learn from, care for, and respect one another.

Challenges

Prior to the development of Whole-Class Sorts, teachers relied on interactive whiteboard (IWB) activities for whole-class instruction sorts.

However, the IWBs utilized outdated technology, causing frequent glitches and disruptions. A new solution was needed to replace these unreliable IWB activities.

The goal was to phase out IWB activities by the end of 2022. Success involved providing teachers with a user-friendly alternative, ensuring adoption, and offering support for a seamless transition.

Solutions

The Whole-Class Sorts app successfully addressed the challenges by offering a reliable solution.

The app's intuitive interface and minimalistic design minimized the learning curve for teachers, enabling them to seamlessly integrate Whole-Class Sorts into their teaching practices.

As a result, students benefited from a more engaging and collaborative learning experience, fostering deeper understanding of word study concepts.

A key aspect in building the app in a way that it’s successful for both teachers and students is the end-to-end development. Our team handled the entire development process, from product and UX/UI design to user research, web development, QA testing, and project management, all while using Angular and Sketch for the UI part.

The next objective of this app is to align it with 508 standards, ensuring accessibility for its users.
