Word Works: Tablet Game Helping Children Learn How Words are Formed

About the app

WordWorks! is an educational mobile app available on both iOS and Android platforms, designed to help children learn how words are formed from vowel and syllable patterns, base words, suffixes, and prefixes.

The games included in WordWorks! are:

Build That Word!

Children hear a word, and then assemble the word by ordering letters or groups of letters.

Sort It Out!

Children categorize words based on spelling, sound, or other attributes.

This was one of the first projects with the Center of Collaborative Classroom (CCC), a non-profit educational organization, committed to ensuring that all students become readers, writers, and thinkers who learn from, care for, and respect one another.

CCC approached us with a clear vision and specific requirements for this app and some requirements for Classview Pro.

They had a precise vision in mind, emphasizing the importance of pixel-perfect execution for this project.

 

Challenges

The challenges presented by the WordWorks! app project were unique and demanding.

The reason that prompted CCC to seek our assistance was their decision to digitize their educational resources for schools, allowing students to practice their skills at home.

At the time, approximately 6 years ago, we were primarily focused on native development, but we eagerly accepted the challenge that our partners trusted us with. Our development team learned Unity within a month and created the app.

 

Solutions

The development of WordWorks! ultimately proved to be a success as it has found a user base of approximately 2 million students in the United States.

Despite the initial challenges, we overcame the obstacles, expanded our skill set, and delivered a product that perfectly met CCC's expectations.

WordWorks! now stands as a starting point to our ongoing 6-year collaboration with CCC.
